THE VIRGINMARYS ● Le Klub, Paris

Un ami bien intentionné et avec bons goûts musicaux m’a embarquée à la découverte d’un duo anglais au fond d’une cave parisienne digne des catacombes, et ô surprise, j’ai kiffé ! Voici donc Ally au chant et à la guitare et Danny à la batterie. On est sur du power / punk rock, et ça transpire sévère.

Ne vous fiez pas à leur énergie débordante, ce ne sont pas des débutants et le groupe a déjà bientôt 20 ans d’existence avec de très belles premières parties à leur actif (Queens Of The Stone Age, Slash, Eagles of Death Metal…). S’ils devaient se décrire, voici leur proposition : “Nous sommes un duo de rock alternatif qui met tout son cœur dans ses chansons aux paroles sincères. Nous sommes exactement ce que nous semblons être.”

La batterie est ultra rapide et puissante, décuplée peut-être par la position surélevée de Danny sur son tabouret et qui se lève même parfois pour frapper avec le plus d’amplitude possible, et ça fonctionne (ses doigts en seront témoins, il a vraiment tout donné). Le trio étant devenu au fil des années un duo, la basse en fond est enregistrée, on pourrait presque s’en passer. Si la guitare en lead est bien sûr imparable et nette, personnellement ce sont plus les modulations de la voix qui m’auront marquée, allant des cris enragés à des passages plus mélodiques, on sent la recherche et cela permet d’avoir une belle variété et ne pas s’ennuyer une seconde le long des 18 chansons de la setlist. Plusieurs d’entre elles sont d’ailleurs réarrangées par rapport aux albums, ce qui ajoute un effet de surprise intéressant. Dixit notre fan de longue date, le set est bien équilibré entre anciennes et nouvelles chansons et ce premier headline français nous donne déjà envie de les revoir sur une scène un peu plus grande qui sera amplement méritée.

D’ailleurs ils en ont pensé quoi de cette date les garçons ? ” Nous sommes déjà venus à Paris quelques fois pour supporter d’autres groupes (Sisters of Mercy, Ugly Kid Joe, Massive Wagons) mais c’était notre premier show en tête d’affiche à Paris et donc nous étions assez nerveux à cette idée, mais honnêtement, ça n’aurait pas pu être mieux pour nous que d’avoir cette salle pleine à craquer et qui chantait les chansons en retour, c’était juste incroyable !!!… On n’arrive toujours pas à y croire, ça nous a vraiment épaté. On cherche encore à faire des premières parties, ce qui serait génial, mais sinon nous serons de retour à 100% l’année prochaine avec un nouvel album et un concert à Paris !”)

Certains spectateurs auront noté une moyenne d’âge un peu élevée (je cite “il n’y a que des quinquas”, ce que je conteste, nous étions tout de même quelques uns à faire descendre cette moyenne), à les écouter on a surtout l’impression que beaucoup d’entre eux auront découvert The Virginsmarys au fil de leurs premières parties précédentes (à vrai dire surtout celle de Massive Wagons en décembre dernier) et auront répondu présent à cette (trop petite) date, tous fervents headbangers.

Et au fait, vous vous demandez maintenant pourquoi “The Virginmarys” non ? Et bien l’histoire est assez surprenante : ” Ally (le chanteur-guitariste) et moi nous étions dans d’autres groupes avant, l’un d’eux s’appelait “For Tomorrows”. On a eu une offre de contrat sur 12 mois pour partir à LA et travailler avec le producteur John Parker. Le deal concernait 4 chansons et il avait 12 mois ensuite pour les vendre à des labels, faute de quoi les droits des chansons nous revenaient ensuite … Malheureusement ça n’a pas fonctionné. Pendant qu’on était là-bas on trainait dans un pub qui s’appelait “The Londoner”. Un soir notre manager causait avec des techniciens de cinéma et l’un d’eux a suggéré qu’on aille dans un club de striptease qui s’appelait “The Virginmary’s” dans la vallée de San Fernando …. Quand on est rentré en Angleterre, on a démarré un nouveau groupe, cette histoire était restée dans nos têtes et le bassiste a alors proposé le nom de the Virginmarys ! Voilà l’histoire !”

A well-intentioned friend with good taste in music took me out to discover an English duo at the bottom of a Parisian cellar worthy of the catacombs, and surprise, I loved it! So here is Ally on vocals and guitar and Danny on drums. This is power/punk rock, and it’s perspiring severely.

Don’t be fooled by their overflowing energy, they are no beginners and the band has already almost 20 years of existence with very beautiful supports to their credit (Queens Of The Stone Age, Slash, Eagles of Death Metal…). If they had to describe themselves, here is their proposal: “We are a 2-piece alternative rock band who wear their heart on their sleeves with honest to God lyrics. What you see is what you get”.

The drum is ultra fast and powerful, perhaps increased tenfold by Danny’s raised position on his stool and sometimes even getting up to hit with as much amplitude as possible, and it works (his fingers will witness it, he really gave everything). The trio having become a duo over the years, the bass in the background is recorded, but you could almost do without it. If the lead guitar is of course unstoppable and clear, personally it’s more the modulations of the voice that will have marked me, ranging from angry cries to more melodic passages, you feel the research and it allows a nice variety and not getting bored for a second along the 18 songs of the setlist. Several of them are also rearranged compared to the albums, which adds an interesting surprise effect. According to our long-time fan, the set is well balanced between old and new songs and this first French headline already makes us want to see them again on a slightly larger stage that will be amply deserved.

By the way, what was their own opinion about this gig ? “We’ve been to Paris a few times now as support to other bands (Sisters of Mercy, Ugly Kid Joe, Massive Wagons) but this was our first headline show in Paris, and so we were pretty nervous about what the night would be like for us but honestly it could not have been better for us to have a full room packed and singing the songs back to us was just the most incredible feeling!!!….i still can’t believe it, it honestly blew our minds. There’s still time if we maybe pick up a support show which would be awesome but if not we will 100% be back next year with a new album and a show in Paris !”

Some spectators may have noticed that the average age is a bit high (I quote, “there are only 50’s olds,” which I dispute; we were still a few to lower this average), listening to them, one gets the impression that many of them will have discovered The Virginsmarys during their previous supports (actually, especially that of Massive Wagons last December) and will have responded to this (too small) date, all fervent headbangers.

And if now you are wondering why the name “The Virginmarys”, well the story is quite funny : ” So me and Ally (the singer/guitarist) have been in different bands previously and one band we were in were called ‘for Tomorrows’. We got offered a 12-month contract to move to L.A and work with a producer called John Parker. The deal was to record a 4-track demo and then he had 12 months to shop it to major labels and if we didn’t get a deal all song rights would revert back to us … Sadly it didn’t work out that way. While we were there, we were staying in a garage in Santa Clarita. And the local bar we used to go to called ‘the Londoner’ was where we hung out mostly. Our manager at the time got talking to these guys who worked on movie sets (setting lights up etc) and one night, one of the guys said ‘you guys should drive to this strip club called ‘the Virginmarys’ in San Fernando valley … When we got back to the UK, we had to start a new band and that had always stuck in our head and the bass player at the time said ‘why don’t we call ourselves the Virginmarys?…..so that’s where it came from !”
